Sony "cedes" low end digital camera market to camera phones
This is an important statement. One of the world's major digital camera manufacturers says, in essence, camera phones will destroy the business for low end camera phones. Am I reading too much into this?
If you've been reading this Weblog, you know I've repeatedly written how camera phones will eat into the market for low end digital cameras. With the introduction of two megapixel camera phones and, this year, three megapixel devices, camera phones also will eat into the market for medium tier digital cameras.
More than Sony
In February I wrote about camera phones eating into the digital camera market in South Korea, according to The Korea Herald.
As I wrote, the relevant item in The Korea Herald was, "Officials at LG Corp., which handles the distribution of Canon cameras in Korea, said the outlook for compact digital cameras is dimming due to the fast penetration of camera phones."
The Business Week article highlights what I have been writing ever since I started this Weblog: Digital camera manufacturers -- especially those creating lower end camera -- need to be very worried about the impact of camera phones on their business.
Not all gloomy
There's not all gloom and doom, however. Companies providing components for digital cameras, such as charge coupled devices (CCDs) are seeing an increase in their business because they have new business oportunities selling products for camera phones.
Also, digital camera vendors could establish relationships with camera phone manufacturers on a variety of levels.
Business Week doesn't report anything new, at least if you've been keeping up with the business by reading Camera Phone Report! The article includes statistics about the current and future camera phone market.
Great site, well done. I enjoy beeing here and i´ll come back soon. You do a great job. Many greetings.
