Camera phone vendors offer non-camera models for Saudi Arabia

Responding to Saudi Arabia's ban on camera phones, cellular handset manufacturers say they will offer phones without cameras in that country, according to an article in ITP Technology.

In April, Samsung -- one of the leaders in offering camera phones worldwide -- said it would offer non-camera handsets in Saudi Arabia, the article notes. LG Electronics, another major supplier of camera phones, also will only offer handsets without cameras.

At the same time, though, handset vendors such as Samsung are aggressively pursuing camera phone sales in less conservative Arab countries. Samsung introduced some 60 phones to its distrbutors in the Middle East during a conference in Dubai earlier this year.

    Fueling camera phone growth

ITP Technology reports Ramdas Rajamani, sales and marketing manager for Samsung Gulf Electronics, said, “Samsung is poised to fuel the growth of the color and camera phone segment in the Middle East market through innovative color/camera models.”
