Samsung on Sunday introduced in South Korea a three megapixel camera phone (see below) -- the second three megapixel handset in that country -- with a 3x optical zoom, flash, mini SD card slot and video capabilities, according to an article in The Chosun Ilbo. The SPH-2300 will retail for 800,000 won ($687).
Casio introduced a three megapixel camera phone with an optical zoom in June.
From the photo in The Chosun Ilbo, the SPH-2300 looks like quite a large handset.
Competing against digital cameras
As I've written many times, camera phones are already eating into the low end VGA digital camera market and will compete against medium tier digital cameras in Japan and South Korea.
The newspaper quotes Chun Young-bok, vice president of the Korea Association for Photonics Industry Development, who says, "Camera phones will widen its share of the digital camera market from now on."

I suspect there's going to be break-point, where the marketplace determines there's too much camera for the phone (or vice-versa). Two features that I think would define the camera-ness of the phone would be a flare hood (most of these lenses appear to be wide-angle, and are very susceptible to off-axis light coming into the image), and a tripod (Darn you engineers! If you're going to give me a camera with an apparent 1/30-sec. shutter, give me a tripod to go with it!).
