U.K. photographer commissioned by Nokia for camera phone collages

Henry Reichhold, a London photographer, has been commissioned by Nokia to use its 7600 and 7610 camera phones to create panoramic collages of several music festivals, according to an article from BBC News Online.

Reichhold takes multiple photos and combines them into one large photo to produce what the BBC says are "stunning landscapes of London seen during both day and night." Nokia will show his photos at the Photokina conference and exhibition in Cologne, Germany in October.

Reichhold is interested in the artistic capabilities of low resolution camera phones and how they relate to the "pointillism" school of painting that uses tiny dots to create paintings. It's a technique that was popularized by Georges-Pierre Seurat, a painter I like, too.

    Pointillism and camera phones

Reichhold says he likes seeing pixels and low resolution photos have "softer, rounded edges and a quality all their own." That's why camera phones are a good medium for him.

The photographer also likes the immediacy of camera phone images, although it's challenging to take good photos, especially of people.

Reichhold transfers the camera phone photos into his Macintosh, edits them and combines them into large collages.
