Verizon Wireless today announced its next generation LG camera phone, the VX7000 (see left). Although the new handset contains just a VGA camera, its distinguishing features are a rotating camera lens, an LED flash and video messaging, according to the press release. The 3.88-ounce VX7000 includes four resolution levels: 160 X 120, 176 X 144, 320 X 240 and 640 X 480.
I hope the VX7000's camera is better than the VX6000's. The LG VX6000 was the first camera phone promoted heavily by Verizon. I liked the phone, but the camera quality was mediocre at best.
This new LG camera phone contains 4MB of storage. Verizon says the phone can store 200 photos and 31 15-second videos. I assume the storage figures are based upon saving the photos at low resolution, but that isn't indicated on Verizon's Web site.
Other features
The VX7000 includes a 176 x 220 pixel TFT screen with 262K colors. It can display 11 lines of text and status icons.
Video messaging should be a big deal for Verizon, that has been one of the laggards to offer the service in the U.S. Video messages can be accompanied by text messages of up to 1,000 characters.
Verizon offers three monthly pricing plans that combine video and text messaging: $7.99 per month for 20 video or photo messages sent or received, plus 500 text messages; $9.99 for 20 video or photo messages plus 750 text messages and $14.95 for 40 video or photo messages plus 1,500 text messages.
The cellular operator also offers a pay-as-you-go plan that costs $.25 for sending or receiving messages. Airtime charges apply for sending messages. Verizon also has photo-only and text-only monthly plans.
Prices
The VX 7000 retails for $249.99 or $229.99 with a one-year contract and $179.99 with a two-year contract.
