Start-up company SpotMeeting has launched its location-based data service where people can search for others who want to meet.
The press release says, "SpotMeeting is the first and only provider of Mobile Proximity Dating, an emerging segment in the rapidly growing online matchmaking industry.
"Currently available as a free browser-based version, it will be a platform-independent service accessible from any Internet enabled device, whether it's a smartphone, WiFi-enabled Laptop/PDA or a home/office PC.
"SpotMeeting will also address four key underachieving applications in the mobile industry: LBS, WAP/WAP- Push, Text-Messaging and WiFi hotspots."
Find a date NOW!
Weeks ago I was briefed by executives from SpotMeeting. The concept is many people don't want to wait to meet someone. They want a date immediately.
Ideally, you would see someone across a room or in a restaurant and you'd be able to meet that person. Or, you would be sitting in your hotel room, bored, and interested in meeting someone.
The company is especially encouraging use of hotspots and has a database of hotspots from Sputnik and Fatport in Canada and T-Mobile and Wayport in the United States. Some hotels also will offer free access.
Scenarios
Here are two scenarios from SpotMeeting:
Scenario 1: "Imagine being at your favorite cafe and you spot someone that you'd be interested in talking with. You're not quite ready to walkup and introduce yourself, nor do you know if they're single."Thus, you pull out your laptop and connect to Internet through the cafe's public WiFi network. Upon logging in to SpotMeeting™, our Location Management System (LMS) immediately determines that you're at Starbucks on Santa Monica Blvd. in Beverly Hills.
"You scroll through the list of singles around you and find that the person you're interested in is available and likes to hike, just like you. You send an instant message to that person asking about the best places to hike along the pacific coast. Upon receiving your message, the person reads through your profile, likes what he/she sees and replies.
"In a matter of minutes, you've found yourself a date."
Scenario 2: "You're at a night club and you're interested in meeting someone for a drink. You pull out your mobile phone, connect to the internet through your phone's browser and login to SpotMeeting.
"Upon logging in, you immediately receive a (WAP-Push) message on your phone asking if you agree to be located. Upon clicking "YES", our servers query your Mobile Service Provider for your coordinates (using GPS-assisted or LBS functionality) which are then fed into the LMS for translation into a physical geographical location.
"Just like that, we've determined that you're in downtown Toronto at Tonic. While perusing the profiles of other singles in proximity you receive several instant messages. You read through the messages along with the profiles of the senders and reply to the one you're interested in.
In a matter of minutes, you've found yourself a date."
