Dialog Semiconductor and the camera lens division of Carl Zeiss are partnering to create camera phone modules that includes the optics and sensor from Zeiss and the microprocessor from Dialog, according to an article in Silicon Strategies.
The article quotes Roland Pudelko, chief executive officer and president of Dialog, as saying, "The battle for the next generation of camera phones will be decided by the combination of CMOS image sensors with innovative optics." He says in the statement that ten megapixel camera phones are "well within reach."
The first product will be a "camera module with a high quality image sensor and integrated image processor. As a result of its three-element lens and extremely aspheric surfaces, the lens is extremely small, with dimensions smaller than the size of a pea, and producing a very high image quality," according to the press release.
Delivery
The press release says volume delivery of the first camera phone modules will begin "soon." The first product is the first of a long-term venture.
This is a great development because Zeiss is one of the world's great lens makers. If the Dialog-Zeiss collaboration focuses on high quality modules, this will be a boon to consumers.
