RealEyes3D today at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes announced Digitizer3, a document scanning application for camera phones that scans and digitizes documents and enables users to fax the image or send it via e-mail.
Digitizer3 will be available first for Series 60 camera phones, followed by other wireless operating systems such as Microsoft Mobile Edition.
The company's press release says:
"Digitzer3 is particularly suited to business users, who can now capture and transmit documents while on the go, or to those who may not have a multi-function printer/scanner nearby, thereby achieving unprecedented mobile productivity for high-value data users.
Digitzer3 addresses practical business needs and everyday scenarios. For example, purchase orders can now be sent immediately from the field, for instant procurement. Claim forms can be sent on-the-spot for fast processing.
"Whiteboard meeting notes can be stored for future use, notebooks can be captured to use in professional office applications. Maps or diagrams can be sent from the field to the office, so that work can start back there before the professional gets back to the office.
"Students can copy pages in reference books for their own use without having to wait in line for the next available copy machine."
[Yesterday RealEyes3D announced a contest awarding an Apple iPod Mini to the person creating the best w-Postcard using the company's software that incorporates handwritten text and graphics into postcard-like messages.
Lots of activity
There is a significant amount of development underway to develop software to turn camera phones into scanning devices for barcodes, text, graphics, etc. Take a look at my category on "barcodes and scanning" for more articles.
I believe scanning has a lot of potential in both the business and consumer markets. You'll be reading much more about these developments in 2005.
