New York Post reports on camera phone photos to humiliate subway harassers

From Lifehacker I see that the New York Post reports how camera phone photos could be used to humiliate flashers and gropers on the New York City subway (see below).

New York Post - article about camera phone photos humiliating subway harassers

“Self defense pros say the power to humiliate flashers and gropers by exposing their overexposure with a snapshot is an even more powerful weapon for a woman than a can of mace or a kick in the groin,” the article says.

Hmmm.  I was born in and grew up in New York until a couple of years after graduate school.  If I were a woman I think Mace might be a better defense than a camera phone photo!  Or maybe an Uzi.

A martial arts teacher says if you don’t have any defense training, public humiliation makes sense because “these guys try to do it when they think no one knows it.”

    Wall of shame

A New York City Councilman, Peter J. Vallone Jr., suggests in the article that “there should be a public wall of shame on every subway line.”

But would the shame of a photo make a difference?  The Post interviewed a 23 year old Manhattanite waiting for a train.

She says, “Why do that?  Just punch them like a true New Yorker would.”

    Humiliation site

One Web site that has been in the news recently, “Holla Back New York City,” employs public humiliation — photos and text — to shame harassers of New Yorkers, as I wrote in May.
